  • Ting Tiew Yik is a postdoctoral researcher specializing in synthetic biology, molecular biotechnology, and probiotic engineering. He completed his PhD at the Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS), The National University of Malaysia (UKM), where his doctoral research focused on the in silico and recombinant protein expression and purification approaches for the functional characterization of the novel pitcher plant (Nepenthes spp.)-derived protease neprosin and the development of engineered Saccharomyces species as next-generation biotherapeutics. His work bridges enzyme discovery and applied synthetic biology, leading to innovative strategies for gluten detoxification and therapeutic delivery via engineered probiotic yeast. Ting has published extensively as first author, including articles in ACS Synthetic Biology, Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins, Journal of Future Foods, Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, and Plants. His research achievements include demonstrating that bioengineered S. cerevisiae expressing neprosin can effectively degrade gluten and advancing S. boulardii as a live biotherapeutic chassis. Throughout his academic career, Ting has presented his work at leading international conferences such as the SynCell Future of Asia symposium and the New Phytologist Next Generation Scientists. Currently, Ting continues to advance probiotic engineering using CRISPR-Cas9 and scale translational applications of synthetic biology for human health. He is passionate about developing safe, effective, and accessible biological solutions for chronic diseases, with a particular interest in gut health, enzyme therapeutics, and precision probiotic platforms.
