Professor Datuk Dr Rokiah Omar is a leading optometrist and academician at Optometry and Visual Science Programme, Faculty of Health Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). She is currently Director at the University Community Transformation Centre, UKM. Her research interests include low vision rehabilitation, special population needs, quality of life, Public Health Optometry and Sports Vision. She received many research and innovation grants and awards at national and international levels. She supervises many research students at undergraduates, Masters and PhD. levels. She played an active role in the establishment of low vision services in Malaysia. She is a Fellow in Low Vision, American Academy of Optometry, Fellow of Association of Malaysian Optometrists, Founding members of Academy Optometry Malaysia and Associate Fellow Academy of Science Malaysia. She has published many articles in reputable journals related to low vision, special population needs, quality of life, Public Health Optometry and Sports Vision, sort after for lectures and plenary speakers in the area of low vision, community engagement locally and internationally. In 2006 Professor Datuk Dr Rokiah became the first optometrist in Asia to be inducted as an International Blind Sports Federation International (IBSA) and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Visually Impaired Classifier. She classifies visually impaired athletes at many disable sports/games locally and internationally. She is currently the Classification Director for Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) and for the ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF). She also involved with many volunteerism and community engagement projects to provide free vision screening and free spectacles to needy family, school children, elderly and disadvantage population in Malaysia.
