   Biografi/ Biography :

  • Dr Zamirah Zainal Abidin berkelulusan Doktor Perubatan Veterinar dari Universiti Putra Malaysia, dan Sarjana Sains Veterinar dari universiti yang sama. Beliau memulakan kerjaya akademik di Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) pada 2002, sebelum melanjutkan pengajian Doktor Falsafah di University of Melbourne, dan bergraduat pada 2013. Beliau kini merupakan pensyarah kanan di Jabatan Diagnostik Kraniofasial dan Biosains, Fakulti Pergigian, UKM . Beliau sebelum ini pernah memegang jawatan pentadbiran di Fakulti Pergigian UKM sebagai Ketua Jabatan (Biologi Mulut Klinikal), Ketua Program Siswazah dan Penyelaras Program Siswazah (Mod Penyelidikan). Beliau sebelum ini merupakan Bendahari Persatuan Antarabangsa Penyelidikan Pergigian Malaysia (IADR). Minat penyelidikan beliau ialah mengenal pasti produk semula jadi yang berpotensi dengan sifat antimikrob terhadap patogen oral. Beliau telah menyelidik beberapa herba yang telah digunakan secara tradisional untuk tujuan terapeutik, seperti kayu manis (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), misai kucing (Orthosiphon stamineus), cengkih (Eugenia caryophyllata), halia (Zingiber officinale) dan minyak zaitun (Olea europaea). Dia juga berminat untuk mengenal pasti kompaun bioaktif, dan mekanisme antibakterianya. Adalah diharapkan dengan memahami aktiviti antimikrob produk semulajadi ini, produk biologikal dapat dirumus dan digunakan secara klinikal dalam pengurusan penyakit mulut.
    Dr Zamirah Zainal Abidin with Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Master of Veterinary Science from the same university. She joined Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2002, before pursuing her PhD at the University of Melbourne, and graduated with her doctoral degree in 2013. She is currently a senior lecturer in the Department of Craniofacial Diagnostics and Biosciences, Faculty of Dentistry, UKM. She has previously held administration posts in the Faculty of Dentistry UKM as Head of Department (Clinical Oral Biology), Head of Postgraduate Programme and Postgraduate Programme Coordinator (Research Mode). She was previously the Treasurer of the Malaysian Section International Association for Dental Research (IADR). Her research interests are identifying potential natural products with antimicrobial properties against oral pathogens. She has investigated several herbs that have been traditionally used for therapeutic purposes, such as cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), Misai Kucing (Orthosiphon stamineus), clove (Eugenia caryophyllata), ginger (Zingiber officinale) and olive oil (Olea europaea). She is also interested in identifying the bioactive constituents, and their antibacterial mechanisms. It is hoped that by understanding the antimicrobial activities of these natural products, biologicals can be formulated and used clinically in the management of oral diseases.
