Dr. Hazrul Izuan Shahiri is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). His expertise lies in Labor Economics and Applied Microeconomics, with a strong focus on employment dynamics, wage structures, vulnerable workers, and the socioeconomic impacts of labor market policies.
Over the years, he has produced impactful research published in reputable journals such as Population, Space and Place, SSM Population Health, European Journal of Psychology Open, and Asia Pacific Economic Literature.
Beyond scholarly publications, he has played a pivotal role in policy-oriented research and consultancy projects. He has led and contributed to national studies on fuel subsidy reforms in the fisheries sector, market potential for agriculture commodities, graduate unemployment, retirement employment, and the broader impacts of minimum wage policies. His consultancy engagements span major agencies such as the Economic Planning Unit, Ministry of Finance, Khazanah Research Institute, Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia, and Perbadanan Taman Negeri Perak.
He is frequently entrusted with advisory and expert roles, serving as Economic Advisor to the Malaysian Public Works Department for the National Slope Master Plan, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Health on health technology evaluations, and Expert Panelist for Khazanah Research Institute’s studies on professionalization of technologists and technicians.
