Zulkarnain Md Idris is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Parasitology and Medical Entomology at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He earned his PhD in Medicine from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. His research focuses on the epidemiology and transmission of parasitic infections, particularly malaria. He has worked on molecular- and sero-surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria in diverse epidemiological settings, including moderate to high endemic areas in Kenya, Africa, and pre-elimination areas in Vanuatu, Oceania. During his doctoral studies, he received several accolades, notably the World Infection Fund Award from the Swedish Initiative, for his contributions to improving methods of combating infectious diseases in developing countries. His current research encompasses various aspects of malaria, including epidemiology, asymptomatic and submicroscopic infections, and modelling, particularly among indigenous communities in Malaysia. He collaborates with the Ministry of Health, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, and international universities in Sweden, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, the UK, and the USA. An active member of the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (MSPTM) and the Swedish Malaria Network, he has published numerous research articles in high-impact journals and serves as a reviewer for various international journals.
