   Biografi/ Biography :

  • My research career officially started with my PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK, under the supervision of Prof Morris J Brown in 2008-2012. There I developed my interest in the disease primary aldosteronism, a common cause for curable secondary hypertension. Upon completion of my PhD, I continued as a research associate with Prof Morris J Brown’s group until the end of 2013, before starting my career here at the National University of Malaysia (UKM) Medical Center. During my period in Cambridge, we managed to characterize the genetics and histology of adenomas causing primary aldosteronism into two groups – those that were similar to the outer layer of the adrenal cortex (the zona glomerulosa) and those that were similar to the middle layer of the adrenal cortex (the zona fasciculata). The findings were presented at several international scientific meetings which led to the attainment of the Austin Doyle (Servier) Award at the 24th International Scientific Meeting of the International Hypertension (ISH) in Sydney, Australia, and the Young Investigator Award at the 39th International Aldosterone Conference in San Francisco, USA. As hypertension affects at least one third of adults in Malaysia, research on primary aldosteronism is essential to be continued in Malaysia. Hence, I am still continuing my research on primary aldosteronism locally here in Malaysia in addition to focusing on the cell-fate/cell function of the zona glomerulosa in the adrenal glands through international collaborations with my PhD supervisor Prof Morris J Brown and co-investigators during my time in Cambridge. This has led to the recognition of the research locally in Malaysia as highlighted by the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (AFES) Investigator Award received in 2015 and the Young Investigator Award (Basic Science) received during the Malaysian Endocrine & Metabolic Society 8th Annual Congress (MAC8) in 2017.
