Wan Shafrina Wan Mohd Jaafar is a Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer at Earth Observation Centre, Institute of Climate Change, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. She received her Ph.D. Degree in Geology & Geophysics (Remote Sensing) from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom in 2018. Her research focused on modelling individual tree aboveground biomass and carbon in a dense tropical rainforest for sustainable forest management. She was the recipient of multiple International award funding for outstanding research and to support research work during her doctoral research. In 2015 and 2016, she received the Lamb Fund and Geography Centenary Research Fund from University of Edinburgh to support her Ph.D. research work and in 2017 she received Elizabeth Sinclair Irvine Bequest & Centenary Agroforestry 89, an award funding awarded annually to the distinguished graduate in Geosciences. She has been involved in multiple grant projects; and currently leads research grants as a Principal Investigator focusing on modelling carbon in a selectively logged forest using high-resolution imageries. Through these projects, she is currently supervising postgraduate students (master and Ph.D.) in the areas of active and passive remote sensing, satellite image processing, geographic information system, machine learning, forest and ecological modelling, land use land cover for forest management, agriculture and sustainable development and climate change. She has received professional recognition by professional bodies for the recognition of her expertise. She has been elected as a Professional Member by Malaysia Board of Technologist Malaysia (MBOT) and Institution of Geospatial and Remote Sensing Malaysia (IGRSM) and a member of International bodies, International Society and Photogrammetry for Remote Sensing (ISPRS). Wan Shafrina`s current research focus is utilizing active airborne laser measurements (Light Detection and Ranging, LiDAR) to map and understand the structural attributes of tropical rainforest.
