Nurkhalida Kamal graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry (2005) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2015) from the University of Strathclyde, Glagsow UK where she completed her PhD in "Isolation and Characterisation of Bioactive Compounds from Vitex pinnata and Associated Fungal Endophytes" under Dr RuAngelie Edrada-Ebel`s supervision . Later she carried out her postdoctoral research in the Natural Products Metabolomics Group (NPMG) under Dr RuAngelie Edrada-Ebel`s supervision which her task was to capture new metabolites from underexplored marine bacteria by embedding holistic metabolomics strategy integrated with efficient bioassays. This project was a collaborative research between the NPMG and Marine Biopolymers Ltd (MBL), a Scottish SME company. Prior to her PhD study, between 2006-2009 she held a position as a Research Assistant in Cancer Research Malaysia (CRM), the only non-profit cancer research accredited laboratory dedicated to Malaysian cancer research under the supervision of Dr Lee Hong Boon. In September 2016 she took up a lecturership in Pharmaceutical Chemisty in the Department of Pharmaceutical Science, Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Cyberjaya and later in 2020 she joined the Institute of System Biology (INBIOSIS), UKM as a lecturer/ research fellow. Her current research interests are on utilizing the application of metabolomics tools such as HR-LCMS, NMR and FTIR to profile and mine secondary metabolites of various biological systems such as plants, microorganisms and mushrooms. She is also interested on looking into the secondary metabolites changes in endophytes by using one strain many compounds (OSMAC) approach or addition of epigenetic modifier for activating cryptic metabolic pathways in biological system. She is the recipient of several awards including the Planta Medica Most Innovative Paper Award for “Metabolomics-Guided Isolation of Anti-trypanosomal Metabolites from the Endophytic Fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae” (2018)
